the state of couples 2026

Every day on Flamme, both partners answer the same question, then see what the other said. Since February 2023 that has added up to 2.7 million answers from 88,000 people. We counted what we could without reading anyone's answers: how fast partners reply, who writes more, what changes at a distance, and which questions couples love.

1. partners answer back within the hour

Once one partner answers a question, the other usually follows quickly. 88% of the time, both partners answer the same question. The median gap between the two is 45 minutes, a quarter of couples answer within about 4 minutes of each other, and 89% within a day.

2. one question gets more than any other

"Why are you still in this relationship?" sounds like a risky thing to ask. Couples treat it as an invitation. Answers average 27 words, more than twice the typical answer, and it has the highest rate of love reactions of any question with 3,000+ answers. Reflective questions about the relationship itself get the longest answers:

  1. Did your parents both work growing up? How has their dynamic influenced your perspective on work?30.4 words
  2. Why are you still in this relationship?27.1 words
  3. Check-in: on a scale of 1-5, how would you rate your communication with your partner and how can you make it better?25.3 words
  4. Is your relationship intimate enough for you? What would make it better in your eyes?24.6 words
  5. How has your relationship changed since you first met your partner?24.5 words
  6. When did you first fall in love with your partner?24.2 words

3. distance makes couples write more

Long-distance partners write about 9% more per answer than couples who live together (12.6 words on average vs 11.6), and 13.6% of their answers run past 25 words vs 11.6%. They mention missing each other, distance or visiting 3 times as often, and cuddles and hugs 27% more. Kids come up 28% less.

4. newer couples say more

Couples together less than six months write about 12% more per answer than couples together four years or longer (11.5 words vs 10.3). Their share of long answers drops too, from 11.8% of answers past 25 words to 9.7%.

5. the gender gap is smaller than you'd think

Among users who shared their gender, women write about 7% more per answer than men (12.9 words vs 12.0). The middle answer is the same length for both: 7 words.

6. deep questions get long answers, playful ones get short ones

Questions about communication get answers about 50% longer than fun questions (14.6 words on average vs 9.8). Questions about intimacy and sex get some of the shortest answers: a median of 6 words, the same as the fun ones.

how we did this

We analysed 2,722,793 answers to 1,919 questions, written in the Flamme app between 2 February 2023 and 14 October 2026 by 88,622 people. Word counts, themes and hours come from a random sample of 250,000 answers, and partner reply times from a random sample of about 11,000 answer pairs. Question rankings and reaction totals use the full data set.

Everything here is a count or an average. No one read individual answers for this report, and none are quoted. The questions shown are Flamme's own. Living situation, relationship length and gender come from what users chose to share at sign-up, so each of those comparisons uses only people who answered.

Limits: Flamme users chose a couples app, so they are not a random sample of all couples. Most answers are in English and the largest group of users is in the US. Themes are counted by keyword, which misses some phrasings. Hours are converted to Eastern time without daylight saving, so treat them as approximate.
