simple sewing projects to design and sew together

The best first sewing project for two is a canvas tote bag: two rectangles, two straps and a few straight seams, about two hours by machine. One of you designs the fabric or the decoration, the other runs the machine, and you swap for the second bag. Below are four beginner projects with exact cutting sizes, what to buy, and whether you need a machine at all.

how to sew a tote bag together in one evening

step 1

Cut (20 minutes)

From medium-weight canvas, cut two rectangles 15 x 17 inches for the body and two strips 4 x 24 inches for the straps. Wash and iron the fabric first if you will wash the bag later, because cotton shrinks.

step 2

Make the straps (20 minutes)

Fold each strip in half lengthwise and iron, open it, fold both long edges in to the center crease, fold again and iron. That gives a 1-inch strap with no raw edges. Stitch 1/8 inch in from both long edges.

step 3

Sew the body (30 minutes)

Place the rectangles right sides together and sew both sides and the bottom. Zig-zag the raw edges so they do not fray. Fold the top edge down 1/2 inch, then 1 inch more, and iron it flat.

step 4

Attach the straps and finish (30 minutes)

Tuck the strap ends under the folded top hem, 3 inches in from each side seam, and pin. Stitch all the way around the hem, then sew a small box with an X through it over each strap end for strength. Turn the bag right side out.

what do you need to start sewing?

  • A basic mechanical machine ($100 to $200) from a mainstream brand. You need straight stitch, zig-zag and reverse. Ignore machines advertising hundreds of stitches.
  • Fabric scissors used only on fabric, plus paper scissors for cutting patterns.
  • Pins or clips, a seam ripper, tailor's chalk, a tape measure and an iron. Ironing each seam does half the work.
  • All-purpose polyester thread in a color that matches the fabric.
  • Woven cotton or canvas for a first project. Stretchy knits and slippery satins can wait.

how do you design it together?

The sewing is the same every time. The design is where the date happens. Choose fabric together at a store, or buy plain canvas and add to it: iron-on letters, fabric paint, a shape cut from another fabric and stitched on, or a contrast strap. Each of you designs one bag for the other without showing it, and you swap them when the last seam is done.

variations & upgrades

hand-sewing night, no machine

Scrunchies and small drawstring pouches work with a needle and backstitch. Put a movie on and give yourselves its running time to finish.

long-distance version

Mail each other half a yard of fabric you picked for the other person. On a video call, both sew a tote from it at the same time. You each end up carrying a bag the other one chose.

take a class

Fabric stores and community sewing studios often run beginner tote or pillow classes for $40 to $90 a person with machines provided. A good first step if neither of you owns a machine yet.

good questions, answered

A scrunchie or an envelope pillow cover. Both are straight seams, take under an hour, and use very little fabric. A tote bag is the best first project that you will use every week.
