🕊️ Dates for Couples
origami projects for couples
A good first origami night for two is three models in rising difficulty: a heart (5 minutes), a crane (15 minutes the first time) and a lily (20 minutes), all from 15 cm (6 inch) squares of origami paper. A pack of 100 sheets costs $5 to $10. If it clicks, the long project couples love is senbazuru, a string of 1,000 cranes, which takes two people about a month of evenings.

how to fold an origami crane
step 1
Pre-crease
Colored side up, fold the square in half corner to corner both ways and unfold. Flip it over and fold it in half edge to edge both ways and unfold.
step 2
Collapse into a square base
Using those creases, bring three corners down to meet the fourth so the paper collapses into a small layered square. The open end, where the loose flaps are, points toward you.
step 3
Make the kite and unfold
Fold the lower edges of the top layer in to the center line, so it looks like a kite. Fold the top triangle down over them. Now unfold those three folds. You only needed the creases.
step 4
Petal fold, both sides
Lift the bottom point of the top layer upward along the horizontal crease, letting the sides fold in to the center on the creases you just made. Flatten it into a long diamond. Flip over and repeat. This is the bird base.
step 5
Narrow, then shape
Fold the lower edges of the top layer to the center on both sides to make the legs thin. Inside-reverse-fold each thin point upward to form the neck and the tail, then reverse-fold the tip of one to make the head. Pull the wings down gently.
what is the 1,000 cranes tradition?
Senbazuru is a Japanese tradition of folding 1,000 paper cranes and stringing them together. The crane is a symbol of long life and good fortune, and an old legend says that folding a thousand grants a wish. Strings of 1,000 cranes are given as wedding gifts in Japan as a wish for a long marriage, and since Sadako Sasaki, a girl who folded cranes while ill after the Hiroshima bombing, they are also left as wishes for peace.
Done as a couple it is a real project, not an evening. Once you are practiced a crane takes about 3 to 5 minutes, so 1,000 cranes is roughly 50 to 80 hours of folding. Split between two people at 20 cranes each a night, that is 25 nights. A common way to string them is 25 strands of 40 cranes, with a bead at the bottom of each strand to stop them sliding off.
variations & upgrades
the message crane
Write a short note on the white side before you fold. Swap cranes and unfold each other's to read it. Then try folding it back up, which is harder than it sounds.
long-distance version
Fold the same model on a video call, one of you leading from a tutorial. For the 1,000-crane project, each of you folds 500 and posts them, and the stringing happens on your next visit.
anniversary origami
Traditional first anniversary gifts are paper. A kusudama ball you folded together, or a jar of 365 tiny stars, one per day of your first year, fits that tradition well.
good questions, answered
The origami heart. It takes about five minutes from a 15 cm square, or from a dollar bill, and looks good first time. The fortune teller and the jumping frog are other easy starters.
