🖋️ Dates for Couples
learn calligraphy and hand lettering together
To learn calligraphy as a couple, start with modern brush lettering: two brush pens, a pad of smooth paper and 20 minutes of basic stroke drills a night. It costs about $20, and you will both write a readable word on the first evening. Once the strokes feel natural, pick a traditional style from the table below and work through it together.

what is the difference between calligraphy and hand lettering?
Calligraphy is writing. Each part of a letter is one stroke, and the pen makes the thick and thin depending on pressure or the angle of the nib. Hand lettering is drawing. You sketch letter shapes, outline them and fill them in, the way a sign painter or poster designer would. Most couples end up doing both: calligraphy for names and notes, lettering for a framed quote or a sign for a party.
a two-week calligraphy plan for two
step 1
Nights 1 to 3: strokes only
Print free practice sheets or rule your own guidelines. Each of you fills one line per stroke. Hold the pen at about 45 degrees to the paper and move from your forearm, not just your fingers.
step 2
Nights 4 to 7: lowercase letters
Work through the alphabet in groups that share strokes: i u w t, then n m h, then a d g q o, then the looped letters. Circle your best letter on each line and show each other.
step 3
Nights 8 to 11: words and names
Write each other's names, then words full of joins like 'minimum' and 'running'. The joins are where your writing starts looking like calligraphy.
step 4
Nights 12 to 14: one real project
Pick one from the list below and finish it. A deadline turns practice into something you keep.
calligraphy writing styles compared
| style | tool | what it looks like | beginner friendly? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern brush | Brush pen | Loose, bouncy script with heavy downstrokes | Yes, start here |
| Italic | Broad-edge nib or chisel marker | Slanted, narrow letters from the Italian Renaissance | Yes, the rules are clear |
| Blackletter (gothic) | Broad-edge nib | Dense, angular, medieval. Hard to read in long passages. | Medium |
| Copperplate | Pointed nib in an oblique holder | Formal, steeply slanted script with hairline upstrokes. Classic wedding invitations. | Hard, takes months |
| Spencerian | Pointed nib | Lighter, more delicate 19th-century American script with less shading | Hard |
the eight basic strokes to drill
Almost every lowercase script letter is built from these. Fill a line of each before writing any letters. Light on the way up, heavy on the way down: that one rule is most of brush calligraphy.
- Upstroke: light pressure, thin line, bottom to top.
- Downstroke: full pressure, thick line, top to bottom.
- Overturn: thin up, curve over, thick down. Part of n and m.
- Underturn: thick down, curve under, thin up. Part of u and i.
- Compound curve: an overturn and underturn joined. Part of n and h.
- Oval: the body of a, d, g, o and q.
- Ascending loop: the tall part of b, h, k and l.
- Descending loop: the tail of g, j and y.

variations & upgrades
long-distance letters
Write one calligraphy letter a month and post it. Paper mail across a distance feels very different from a text, and you get to watch each other's writing improve envelope by envelope.
take a workshop
Art supply and stationery shops often run 2 to 3 hour beginner workshops for $45 to $90 a person, kit included. Worth it if you want someone to correct your pen angle in person.
the dip pen upgrade
Once brush pens feel easy, try a pointed dip pen: an oblique holder, a Nikko G nib, a bottle of sumi or walnut ink, and smooth paper. Expect ink blots for the first week. Everyone gets them.
good questions, answered
Modern brush lettering, because brush pens forgive shaky hands and there are no strict letter proportions. Italic is the easiest traditional style: its rules are clear and the broad-edge pen makes the thick and thin strokes for you.
