🪚 Dates for Couples

woodworking projects for couples

The best first woodworking project for a couple is a cedar planter box or a hardwood serving board. Each takes 2 to 4 hours, needs under $50 of wood, and uses a handful of basic tools. One of you measures and marks, the other cuts, and you swap halfway. Below are four builds in order of difficulty, with a full cut list for the planter.

how to build a serving board together

step 1

Pick the board

Buy a 3/4-inch maple, cherry or walnut board 6 to 8 inches wide from a lumber yard or big-box store. Maple is the cheapest and hardest of the three. Skip soft pine for anything you cut food on.

step 2

Design it

Cut it to about 16 inches long. One of you draws the handle and corner shapes in pencil, the other approves or redraws. Trace around a mug for even rounded corners.

step 3

Cut and sand

Cut the outline with a jigsaw, taking turns and keeping your free hand well behind the blade. Sand through 80, 120, 180 and 220 grit. Wipe it with a damp cloth to raise the grain, let it dry, and sand once more at 220 so it stays smooth after washing.

step 4

Oil and sign it

Flood it with food-safe mineral oil, wait 20 minutes and wipe off the excess. Repeat the next day. Burn or carve your initials and the date on the back before the last coat.

planter box cut list

All from one 8 ft cedar 1x8 board, which actually measures 3/4 x 7-1/4 inches. The finished box is 24 inches long, 7-1/4 inches wide and about 8 inches tall. You use 83-1/2 inches of the board, so there is spare for one mistake.

  • Drill three 1/2-inch drainage holes in the bottom.
  • Leave the cedar unfinished, or use an exterior oil labeled safe for planters if you are growing herbs to eat.

what tools do beginners need?

  • Tape measure, speed square and a pencil. Mark with a V so you know which side of the line to cut.
  • A handsaw or a circular saw. The handsaw is slower and quieter and fine for all four projects.
  • A drill/driver with a countersink bit.
  • Two to four bar clamps at $10 to $25 each. You will always want one more clamp.
  • Sandpaper in 80, 120, 180 and 220 grit. A random orbit sander ($50 to $90) saves an hour per project.
  • Wood glue, safety glasses, ear protection and a dust mask. Non-negotiable when a power saw or sander is running.

variations & upgrades

no tools, no garage

Book a class. Woodcraft and Rockler stores in the US run beginner classes, and makerspaces with woodshops usually charge around $50 to $150 a month and require a safety induction first. A one-off class is the cheapest way to try the big tools before buying anything.

long-distance version

Order the same wood and build bookends at the same time on a video call. Each of you keeps one of each pair, so the set is only complete when you are together.

make it a gift

Build two serving boards side by side and give one to the next couple you know getting married. Write the date you made it on the back.

good questions, answered

A cedar planter box. It is all straight cuts and screws, finishes in an afternoon, and costs $25 to $40 in wood. A hardwood serving board is a close second and makes a better gift.
