jungle expeditions for couples

For a first jungle trip as a couple, a guided rainforest lodge is the right call: you sleep in a real bed, guides take you out on dawn and night walks, and three or four nights in Costa Rica or the Peruvian Amazon gives you most of what an expedition does with far less risk. Camping expeditions deeper in are a second trip. Below are four destinations compared by season, access and cost, plus health prep and a packing list.

where should a couple go for a first jungle trip?

Seasons shift year to year and differ inside each country. Check the lodge's own guidance for the month you want.

lodge or expedition?

  • Lodge. Fixed base, private room, meals included, two or three guided outings a day. Best for a first trip and for anyone who wants a shower at night.
  • River cruise. A small boat on the Amazon with cabins, stops for walks and canoe trips. Pricier, very little hiking.
  • Camping expedition. Several days hiking or canoeing between camps with a guide team. Hard work, lots of mud, the deepest forest you will see. Do it after a lodge trip, not instead of one.

how to plan a jungle trip as a couple

step 1

Agree what you want to see

Monkeys and birds are easy almost anywhere. Orangutans mean Borneo, pink river dolphins mean the Amazon, sloths and scarlet macaws are easy in Costa Rica. Deciding this first picks the country for you.

step 2

Choose the season

Dry season means easier trails and fewer mosquitoes. Wet season means higher rivers, which lets canoes go deeper into flooded forest. Neither is wrong, but know which one you are booking.

step 3

Book a lodge with guides included

Read what is included: transfers, meals, how many guided outings a day, group size. A lodge where two people get their own guide is worth paying extra for.

step 4

Do the boring paperwork early

Passports valid six months past your return, travel-health appointment, evacuation-covering insurance, and copies of everything in both of your bags.

what health prep do you need for the jungle?

Vaccines and malaria advice depend on exactly where you are going, so use official sources rather than a blog. In the US that is the CDC Travelers' Health destination pages, in the UK the NHS fitfortravel and TravelHealthPro sites. Book a travel-health clinic appointment a month or more before you fly, because some vaccines need time and yellow fever certificates can be required for entry or onward travel in some countries. Get travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, since jungle lodges can be hours from a hospital.

what to pack for two

  1. 1. Lightweight long-sleeved shirts and long trousers that dry fast. Cotton stays wet for days.
  2. 2. Rubber boots. Many lodges lend them, so check before packing a pair.
  3. 3. Two headlamps with spare batteries. Night walks are the best part.
  4. 4. Insect repellent with DEET or picaridin, and a permethrin spray for clothes if your clinic recommends it.
  5. 5. Dry bags for phones, passports and cameras.
  6. 6. A lightweight rain jacket each. It will rain, even in dry season.
  7. 7. Binoculars, one pair minimum. Wildlife is often high in the canopy.
  8. 8. Any prescribed medicines, a basic first aid kit and blister plasters.

variations & upgrades

a cheaper first taste

Not ready for a full trip? A guided night walk or a canopy walkway in a cloud forest or rainforest reserve close to a city is a one-day version, often under $100 each. In Costa Rica, plenty of reserves within a few hours of San Jose offer this.

add a soft landing

Finish the trip with two nights somewhere easy: a beach in Costa Rica, Cusco in Peru, or Kota Kinabalu in Borneo. After four days of mud, clean sheets do a lot for the mood.

long-distance version

Plan the trip together on video calls as your shared project. Each of you researches one destination and pitches it to the other, then you meet in the gateway city and fly in together.

good questions, answered

For a first trip, a 3 to 4 night guided rainforest lodge stay. Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula is the easiest to reach, the Peruvian Amazon gives the classic river-lodge experience, and Borneo is the place for wild orangutans.
