🚁 Dates for Couples

drone photography for couples

A drone photography date works best with a camera drone under 250 grams, an open field or empty beach, and the hour before sunset. In the US, recreational flyers must pass the FAA's free TRUST test first, drones over 250 g must be registered, and you stay under 400 feet and within sight. Below is how to pick a beginner drone, what the rules are, and a 10-shot list for photos of the two of you.

TRUST certificate for every pilot. FAA registration if over 250 g.

what are the drone rules for recreational flyers?

These are the main US rules for flying for fun, from the FAA's recreational flyer guidance. Outside the US the rules are different (the UK's CAA and the EU's EASA each run their own registration and tests), so check your country's aviation authority before you fly.

  • Pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). It is free, online and does not expire. Carry proof when you fly.
  • Register your drone at FAA DroneZone if it weighs more than 250 g (0.55 lb). It costs $5 and lasts three years. Mark the number on the drone.
  • Registered drones must broadcast Remote ID, which most current models do built in.
  • Fly at or below 400 feet and keep the drone within visual line of sight.
  • Controlled airspace near airports needs authorisation first. Check with a B4UFLY app before every flight.
  • Don't fly over people, moving cars or stadiums. Drones are banned from launching or landing in US national parks.

how to run a drone photo date

step 1

Check the spot the day before

Open a B4UFLY app at your chosen location to confirm the airspace, check the weather for wind (most small drones struggle above about 20 mph gusts), and look up sunset time.

step 2

Practise for 10 minutes first

Before any photos, each of you flies a slow square at head height over the grass. Take off, hover, land. Small drones are easy, but the first two minutes still feel strange.

step 3

Pilot and subject take turns

One flies while the other stands in the shot, then swap. Many drones also have follow or orbit modes, so you can both be in the frame while the drone flies itself.

step 4

Land with battery to spare

Bring it home at about 30 percent battery. A drone that runs flat over water is a very short relationship with a drone.

the 10-shot list for couple photos

  1. 1. Top-down: lie on a blanket or the sand and shoot straight down from 10 to 15 metres.
  2. 2. The reveal: start close on your faces, fly backwards and up to show the whole landscape.
  3. 3. Long shadows: shoot low sun from behind you so your shadows stretch across the frame.
  4. 4. Walking away: hold hands and walk down a path while the drone follows from behind and above.
  5. 5. Orbit: stand still and let the drone circle you slowly at 5 metres up.
  6. 6. Tiny people, big world: fly high and wide so you are two dots in a huge scene.
  7. 7. The dronie: wave at the camera as it flies straight back and up.
  8. 8. Shoreline: walk along the line of the waves from directly above.
  9. 9. Writing in the sand or grass: draw your initials big enough to read from 20 metres.
  10. 10. Silhouette: put the sunset behind you and shoot at your height for two black outlines.

variations & upgrades

golden hour timing

Golden hour is roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when light is warm and soft. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, use the first battery for wide scenery and the second for shots of you two as the light turns orange.

no drone yet?

Rent one for a weekend from a camera rental shop, or start with a phone on a tripod and a timer for the same shot list from ground level. If you love it, buy the drone.

long-distance version

Each of you films the place you live from above on the same weekend, then edits a 30-second clip and sends it over. It is a better tour of each other's world than any photo.

good questions, answered

A camera drone under 250 g with GPS hover, return-to-home and a follow or orbit mode. These usually cost about $300 to $800. Lighter drones are easier to travel with and, in the US, do not need FAA registration when flown for fun.
