🧗 Dates for Couples

rock climbing for couples

The easiest way for a couple to start rock climbing is a bouldering session at an indoor gym: no ropes, no class needed, about $20 to $35 each for a day pass plus $5 to $8 for shoe rental. If you like it, take a belay class together so you can climb roped routes and hold each other's rope, then plan a first outdoor trip with a guide. This page covers all three steps, in order.

how to plan your first gym climbing date

step 1

Book a quiet slot

Weekday afternoons and weekend mornings are calmer than weekday evenings. Many gyms ask you to sign a waiver online before you arrive. Do it at home to save 15 minutes at the desk.

step 2

Wear the right clothes

Stretchy trousers or shorts, a T-shirt, no jewellery. Rental shoes should fit snug, tighter than street shoes, but not painful.

step 3

Start on the easiest problems

Try every VB and V0 in the gym before moving up. Watch each other's attempts and point out holds from the ground. Climb down when you can instead of jumping, and land on both feet.

step 4

Stop before your arms go

Beginners' forearms tire in 60 to 90 minutes. Finish on one climb you both sent, then go eat. Your hands will be shaking holding the menu.

the belay commands to learn together

  1. 1. Climber: 'On belay?' Am I attached and are you ready?
  2. 2. Belayer: 'Belay on.' I have you.
  3. 3. Climber: 'Climbing.' I am about to start.
  4. 4. Belayer: 'Climb on.' Go ahead.
  5. 5. Climber: 'Take!' Pull the rope tight, I want to rest on it.
  6. 6. Climber: 'Lower.' I am done, bring me down. The belayer lowers slowly and steadily.

variations & upgrades

your first outdoor climbing trip

Book a certified guide for your first day on real rock. In the US, look for an AMGA-certified guide, and expect roughly $250 to $600 for a full day for two depending on the area. The guide brings ropes and builds anchors, you bring shoes, harnesses and lunch. Outdoor grades feel harder than gym grades, so start two grades below what you climb indoors.

beginner-friendly places to go

Red River Gorge in Kentucky (sport climbing, best in spring and fall), Joshua Tree in California (granite, best October to April), Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas (sandstone, best October to April) and the Shawangunks in New York (classic trad routes, guided days are common). Abroad, Kalymnos in Greece and Railay in Thailand are known for easy-access sport routes. Book lodging near the crag so the walk-in is short.

outdoor etiquette to agree on

Pack out everything, including tape and food scraps. Stay on existing trails. Don't top rope directly through the fixed anchors at busy sport crags, rig your own gear instead. Keep noise down, and give up a route if another party is waiting. Check for seasonal closures to protect nesting birds before you go.

long-distance version

Climb at your own gyms on the same evening and send each other a video of the problem you are working on. Next time you are together, try each other's hardest problem.

good questions, answered

Yes, especially bouldering. Climbs are short, you take turns, and you spend the session cheering each other on and solving problems together. Roped climbing adds trust because one partner holds the other's rope.
