✍️ Dates for Couples

crossword puzzles for couples

Crosswords are one of the easiest daily rituals a couple can share: one puzzle, two brains, 10 to 40 minutes, usually with coffee. Pick a puzzle that matches your level (for the New York Times, Monday is the easiest and Saturday the hardest), solve it together on one screen or race on two, and now and then write a custom crossword about your relationship for your partner.

Excellent. Same puzzle, same time, every day.

which crossword should a couple start with?

Start a level below where you think you are. A puzzle you finish together is a good morning. A puzzle you abandon at 60% is a small argument about who should have known the opera clue.

how to solve a crossword as a couple

step 1

Choose co-op or race

Co-op: one grid, one pen, swap who writes every 10 answers. Race: both open the same puzzle on separate devices at the same moment, no peeking, fastest correct grid wins.

step 2

Split the clues by strength

In co-op, each of you claims subjects before you start (sport, film, food, science). Anything in your subject, you get 10 seconds' first crack at before the other can answer.

step 3

Agree what counts as cheating

A good house rule: no searching, but one 'check a square' each per puzzle. In an app, using reveal on a full word costs the solver the next coffee.

step 4

Keep a log

Write the date, the puzzle and your time in a shared note. Watching your Wednesday time drop over two months is better motivation than any streak counter.

variations & upgrades

write a custom crossword for them

Choose 12 to 20 answers about you two: the street of your first date, the dog's middle name, the film from date two. Write a clue for each, then paste the list into a free maker like Crossword Labs, which builds the grid and gives you a link or a printable page. It takes about an hour. Print it on good paper, frame it for an anniversary, or slip it into their Sunday paper.

long-distance version

Race the same daily puzzle on a call at a fixed time and screenshot your final grids. For co-op over distance, a shared-grid crossword site lets you both type into the same puzzle and watch each other's letters appear.

learn cryptics together

Cryptic clues have a plain definition at one end and wordplay (anagrams, hidden words, sounds-like) at the other. Do one Guardian cryptic a week with the answers open, reading the explanation for every clue. By month two you will each solve a few clues alone, and cracking one together is a real thrill.

good questions, answered

Either co-op, sharing one grid and swapping who writes, or as a race, solving the same puzzle on two devices and comparing times. Many couples keep it as a daily habit with the free NYT Mini or a free daily from The Guardian or USA Today.
