snowboarding trip planning for couples

For a first snowboarding trip as a couple, book a beginner lesson for day one, rent everything, buy lift tickets online well ahead, and go in January after the holidays or in early March. That order matters most, because lift tickets bought at the window are the biggest avoidable cost, and a first day without a lesson is the day most likely to end in an argument. Here is the full plan, with cost ranges.

how to plan a first snowboarding trip together

step 1

Pick the resort for beginners, not bragging

You want a resort with a dedicated beginner area, a slow chairlift or magic carpet (a conveyor belt lift), and plenty of long green runs. A small local hill can be a better first trip than a famous mountain, and it costs far less.

step 2

Book lift tickets and lessons early

Resorts price lift tickets dynamically, and they are cheapest bought online in advance. Many offer beginner packages that bundle a lesson, rental and a limited lift ticket for less than buying them separately. If you might ride more than a few days a season, compare a multi-resort pass like Epic or Ikon.

step 3

Rent, do not buy

Rent board, boots and helmet for the first trip, at the resort or a shop in town the night before. If you get hooked, buy boots first. They matter most for comfort, and rented boots are where most beginner misery comes from.

step 4

Plan the days around energy

Day one is the hardest. Book the lesson in the morning, quit by mid-afternoon, and plan a hot tub, a sauna or a long dinner. Days two and three you ride together, with a fixed lunch spot so you can split up and meet back easily.

what does a first snowboard trip cost?

Prices vary enormously by resort, country and week, so use these as rough US ranges per person per day and check the resort's own site.

itemrough cost per personhow to pay less
Lift ticket$50 to $100 at small hills, $150 to $250+ at big resorts at peakBuy online weeks ahead, go midweek, or use a multi-resort pass
Group lesson$100 to $250 a day, often with a beginner lift ticketBeginner packages, smaller resorts
Rental (board, boots, helmet)$40 to $80 a dayRent from a shop in town, book multi-day
Clothing$0 if you borrow, $150+ to buy basicsBorrow jackets and pants, buy your own gloves and base layers
LodgingVery wide rangeStay in the nearest town rather than slopeside
Food on the mountain$20 to $40 for lunchPack lunch and snacks, buy the hot drink

what if one of us skis and the other snowboards?

  • The skier should not teach. Book the boarder a lesson and let the skier take a morning on harder runs.
  • Choose runs without long flat sections. Skiers can pole across flats, snowboarders have to unstrap and walk.
  • Agree a meeting spot and a time at the base before every run that splits up. Phones die in the cold.
  • The boarder sits down to strap in at the top of each run. The skier waiting a minute is normal, not a failure.
  • Some lifts are easier for one than the other. Ride the chairlift together and laugh at the getting off.

regular or goofy: which foot goes forward?

Regular means left foot forward, goofy means right foot forward. A common test is to stand with your feet together and have your partner give you a gentle, unexpected push from behind. The foot you step forward with to catch yourself is usually your front foot. Your instructor will check on day one, and you can switch the bindings in a minute if it feels wrong.

packing list for two

  1. 1. Waterproof jacket and snow pants each (borrowing is fine).
  2. 2. Two thermal base layers each, top and bottom. No cotton.
  3. 3. Mid layer: fleece or a light down jacket.
  4. 4. Ski socks, one pair per day. One thick pair, not two thin pairs.
  5. 5. Waterproof gloves or mittens, plus thin liner gloves.
  6. 6. Goggles and a neck gaiter. Sunglasses do not stay on when you fall.
  7. 7. Wrist guards and padded shorts for the boarder. Beginners fall on wrists and tailbones.
  8. 8. Sunscreen and lip balm. Snow reflects a lot of sun.
  9. 9. Small backpack with water, snacks and a phone battery pack.
  10. 10. Something for the evening: swimwear for a hot tub, a card game, comfy shoes.

variations & upgrades

the day-trip test

Not sure you will like it? Do a single day at the nearest small hill first, with a lesson and rental. If you both want more after that, plan the proper trip.

the shared lesson

If you are both new, book the same group lesson or a private lesson for two. Learning at the same speed, falling at the same moments, is the best part of a first trip.

long-distance couples

Pick a resort roughly between you and make the trip your reunion. Plan the itinerary together on a call, split who books what, and use our long-distance countdown for the weeks in between.

good questions, answered

Yes, if you plan for beginner days. Book lessons, keep day one short, and build evenings that recover sore legs. The shared falls tend to become the stories you tell for years.
