⛸️ Dates for Couples
ice skating for couples
An ice skating date costs about $15 to $30 each at a local rink (admission plus rental) and runs 90 minutes to two hours, which is about as long as beginner legs last. The trick to skating as a couple is holding hands loosely, so when one of you falls the other stays up. Below: how to plan it, how to skate together, and what to do when neither of you can stop.

how to plan an ice skating date
step 1
Pick the session
Check the rink's public skate schedule online, since many rinks only open to the public between hockey games and lessons. Weekday evenings and the first weekend morning session are quieter. Some rinks require you to book a time slot in advance.
step 2
Get the skates right
Rental skates should be snug, with your heel pushed to the back. Lace loosely over the toes and tight across the ankle so it does not wobble. If your ankles fold inward, the laces are too loose, not your ankles too weak.
step 3
Spend 15 minutes on the wall
Short steps first, like marching. Then push out with one foot at an angle and glide. Knees bent, weight forward, eyes on where you are going rather than on your feet. Most beginners can let go of the wall within the first session.
step 4
Skate together, then thaw
Once you can glide, hold hands and do laps (technique below). Stop before you are exhausted, because tired legs are when people fall. Plan the hot drink after; it is half the date.
how do you skate holding hands without both falling?
- Skate side by side and hold inside hands at hip height, arms relaxed. A loose grip means one fall stays one fall.
- Match strides. The stronger skater shortens their push so you glide together instead of being towed.
- Do not link arms or hug while moving until you both can stop. Linked arms take two people down.
- If one of you starts to fall, let go. The other person catching them usually means a double fall.
- Once you are steady, try the side-by-side hold ice dancers use: one arm around the other's waist, the other hands joined in front. Only on a quiet rink.
how do you fall and get up on ice?
When you feel it going, bend your knees and drop to one side, onto your hip, rather than backwards. Keep your hands in your lap or close, so nobody skates over your fingers. To get up, roll onto your hands and knees, put one foot flat between your hands, then the other, and stand slowly. Your partner can steady you, but should not try to pull you up by the arms.
what does an ice skating date cost?
| option | typical cost per person | notes |
|---|---|---|
| Local indoor rink public session | $8 to $20 plus $5 to $10 rental | The best first date. Quietest on weekday evenings. |
| Seasonal outdoor rink in a park or town square | Free to $15 plus rental | Many towns run cheap winter rinks. Check if they close in rain or thaw. |
| Landmark city rink | Often $30 or more at peak times | Book ahead. Go for the setting, not the skating space. |
| Group learn-to-skate class | Often $100 to $200 for a multi-week course | Many US rinks run Learn to Skate USA classes for adults. |
| Frozen lake or pond | Free | Only where the ice is officially tested and open. Never guess the thickness. |
beginner tips that actually help
- 1. Bend your knees more than feels natural. Straight legs are the number one reason beginners fall backwards.
- 2. Look ahead, not down. You go where you look.
- 3. To stop, push your heels apart and toes in (the snowplough) and scrape the ice gently.
- 4. Skate in the same direction as everyone else. Most public rinks run counterclockwise, but follow the flow.
- 5. Keep your arms out a little for balance, not flapping.
- 6. Take a break off the ice every 30 minutes. Tired feet in rental skates hurt more than cold ones.
- 7. Do not wear jeans if you can avoid it. Wet denim on a cold rink is a long afternoon.
variations & upgrades
night skate
Many rinks run evening sessions with music or lights, sometimes called disco or glow skate. Same price, better atmosphere, more people. Go once you can let go of the wall.
roller skating instead
No rink nearby, or it is summer? A roller rink session uses the same balance and the same hand-holding rules, and most rent quad skates. Falling hurts a little more, so knee pads are worth it.
long-distance version
Both of you book a public session at a rink near you at the same hour and send a 10-second clip of your best glide. Video call afterwards over the hot chocolate. Next visit, you skate together and compare progress.
good questions, answered
Yes, because nobody expects you to be good. Holding hands has a practical reason, falling is funny rather than embarrassing, and the hot drink afterwards gives you somewhere to talk. Go to a quiet session so you are not dodging hockey kids.
