What clay should beginners use for sculpting at home?

Air-dry clay is the easiest: no oven, smooths with water, and costs about $10 to $15 for enough for two heads. Polymer clay holds detail better and is much tougher, but it needs baking in an oven at the temperature on the packet.

Do we need an armature?

For a fist-sized head, a ball of tightly packed kitchen foil on a chopstick or short wire is enough. It saves clay and keeps the walls thin, which stops polymer clay cracking in the oven and helps air-dry clay dry evenly.

How long does a sculpting session take?

Plan 2 to 3 hours: 15 minutes building the core, three 20-minute sittings each with swaps in between, and a break. Air-dry pieces then need 1 to 3 days to harden fully.

How is this different from a pottery date?

Pottery makes vessels, like bowls and mugs, usually on a wheel or by hand-building, and needs a kiln. Sculpting here means modeling a figure, in this case each other's head, with clay that dries in the air or bakes in a home oven.

The best sculpting date for two is a portrait swap: sit across the table from each other and sculpt your partner's head in clay, about the size of a fist, in three 20-minute sittings. You need $25 to $40 of clay and tools, a ball of kitchen foil for the core, and the willingness to give someone you love a slightly lopsided nose. Nobody needs experience. The face proportions below do most of the work.

how to run a sculpt-each-other session

step 1

Build the core (15 minutes)

Scrunch kitchen foil into an egg shape about 2-1/2 inches tall and press it tight. Push a short piece of armature wire or a chopstick into a lump of clay as a base and mount the foil egg on top. The foil keeps the clay about 1/4 inch thick, so it dries or bakes without cracking.

Sitting one: the big shapes (20 minutes)

Cover the core in clay. Sit facing each other with a lamp to one side so the face throws shadows. Block in the jaw, the brow ridge, the nose as a wedge and the cheeks. No details yet. Then swap: the sitter becomes the sculptor.

step 3

Sitting two: features (20 minutes)

Press in eye sockets with your thumb, add the nose, lips and ears as small pieces of clay blended in at the edges. Use the proportions below. Look at your partner more than at the clay. Swap again.

step 4

Sitting three: the one thing (20 minutes), then reveal

Pick the one feature that makes them look like them: the eyebrows, the hair, a dimple, the shape of their smile. Spend the whole sitting on it. Turn both heads around at the same time. Laughing is allowed, editing is not.

The eyes sit halfway between the top of the head and the chin. Beginners almost always put them too high.
The bottom of the nose sits about halfway between the eyes and the chin.
The mouth sits about one-third of the way down from the nose to the chin.
The ears run roughly from the brow line to the bottom of the nose.
The space between the eyes is about one eye wide.

air-dry clay or polymer clay?

If you use polymer clay, bake it on a tray lined with paper in a well-ventilated kitchen, at the temperature the brand prints on the packet, and do not let it go above that. Air-dry clay is the easier first choice if you are not sure you will keep them.

Five minutes, eyes closed, sculpting your partner's face from touch alone: you can feel their face with one hand while the other shapes the clay. The results are terrible and it is the most intimate five minutes of the evening.

long-distance version

Sculpt from a video call with your partner holding still in good light, or from three photos: front, side and three-quarter. Post the finished head to them. It will arrive slightly damaged and that makes it better.

go out instead

Community art centers and art schools run drop-in clay sculpture and portrait classes, often $30 to $70 a session with clay provided. A live model session is a good next step once you have done each other.
