indoor soccer for couples

Soccer for two people is mostly passing: two-touch, one-touch, wall passes and passing through a gate, then a 1v1 keep-away game to finish. That works on a futsal court, a rec centre floor, a garage or a strip of grass in about 40 minutes. When you want a real game, co-ed indoor leagues and futsal drop-ins are built for exactly this.

how to run a soccer passing session for two

step 1

Warm up (5 minutes)

Pass gently with the inside of the foot from 5 metres while jogging on the spot. Then 20 toe taps on top of the ball each and some side shuffles.

step 2

Run the passing drills (25 minutes)

Work through the drills in the table below, about four or five minutes each. Count clean passes, not attempts. A clean pass arrives on the floor at the other person's feet.

step 3

Play keep-away (5 minutes)

Mark a 5 by 5 metre square. One of you keeps the ball for 30 seconds while the other tries to win it or knock it out. Six rounds, swap each time. It is the two-person version of a rondo, and it is exhausting.

step 4

Penalty shootout (5 minutes)

Two shoes as a goal 3 metres wide, five penalties each, alternating keeper. Sudden death if level. Loser carries the ball home.

is futsal the same as indoor soccer?

Not quite. Futsal is played five-a-side on a hard court with lines instead of walls and a size 4 ball that is heavier and bounces far less, so it stays on the floor and rewards close control. Arena-style indoor soccer is played on turf inside walls the ball can bounce off, a bit like hockey boards. For a couple learning together, futsal is the friendlier start: it is slower and the ball does what you ask.

how do couples join an indoor soccer league?

  • Look for co-ed or mixed divisions at indoor soccer centres and rec departments. Most require a minimum number of women on the field, so couples help a team meet the rule.
  • Join as free agents if you do not have a team. Most leagues place individuals and pairs onto teams.
  • Start in the lowest division, usually labelled recreational or beginner.
  • Seasons often run 8 to 10 weeks with one game a week. Budget for a team fee split between players.
  • Try a drop-in or pickup night together first so the first league game is not your first game.

variations & upgrades

garage or living-room soccer

A foam ball or a half-deflated ball, two shoes for a goal, knees-only rule for the keeper. Play first to five, then a keepy-uppy contest: highest number of touches without the ball touching the floor wins. Move the lamp first.

watch-and-train

Put a match on and do a forfeit every time your team concedes: 20 toe taps, 10 squats or one minute of keepy-uppy at half-time. You both pick a team before kickoff.

long-distance version

Wall passes and keepy-uppy translate perfectly to a video call. Three rounds of 60 seconds each, read out your counts, and the loser picks a question for the other to answer. Track your best scores in a shared note and watch them climb.

good questions, answered

Two-touch and one-touch passing at 5 metres, gate passing through two cones, give-and-go runs, wall passes, long switches and a 1v1 keep-away square. Finish with a five-penalty shootout.
