How do you play HORSE in basketball?

The first player takes any shot they like and describes it. If they make it, the second player has to copy it exactly. Missing the copy earns a letter. If the first player misses, the other player gets to set a shot. The first person to spell HORSE loses.

Where can we play basketball indoors?

Rec centre open gyms, YMCA-type gyms, school and church gyms that rent by the hour, and some trampoline parks and arcades with hoops. Open gym often costs $5 to $15 per person. Call to check it is not a full-court pickup session.

What size basketball should we use?

Size 7 is the standard men's ball and size 6 is the standard women's ball. Use one ball size for every game so nobody can blame the ball. A size 6 is easier for most mixed couples.

How do you make basketball fair for a beginner?

Give the stronger player a rule instead of free points: weaker hand only, a longer word in HORSE, or shooting from further back. Every game should feel winnable for both of you, or it stops being a date.

how to run a basketball date for two

step 1

Find a hoop

Rec centres and gyms run open gym hours or rent half courts by the hour. Many schools and churches rent gyms too. Call ahead: open gym can mean a full-court pickup game you cannot shoot around.

Warm up for 10 minutes

Layups from both sides, ten each. Then form shooting close to the basket: one hand, elbow under the ball, five makes from each side before you step back.

step 3

Play a three-game series

Pick three games from the table below. Loser of each game chooses the next one, which gives the person behind a small edge. Keep score on a phone or the gym's chalkboard.

Settle it at the line

If the series is tied, ten free throws each, alternating every five. Still tied, sudden death. The champion picks dinner.

how do you keep it competitive when one of you is better?

Give the stronger shooter a rule, not a points gift. Points gifts feel like charity; rules make them work harder and still let them show off.

Weaker hand only for the stronger player, for one game of the three.
In HORSE, the stronger player spells HORSE while the other spells PIG.
Around the world: the stronger player has to make every spot twice.
Free throws: the stronger player shoots from a step behind the line.
One-on-one: the stronger player can only score from outside the key.

what is a basketball shooting contest date?

Make it an event. Write five games on slips of paper, draw them out of a cup, and play each one as a round. One point per round won, double for the last round. Arcade hoop machines at bars and arcades (Pop-A-Shot is the best-known brand) are a perfect finale: a timed round of under a minute, a scoreboard, and a high score you can try to beat on your next date.

at home with a mini hoop

An over-the-door hoop and a foam ball run HORSE, around the world (spots marked with tape on the floor) and beat the clock on a rainy night. Trick shots off the sofa are allowed and encouraged.

watch party rules

Put a game on and agree a rule: every time either real team makes a three, you both take a mini-hoop shot from the couch. Most makes by the final buzzer wins. Close games are exhausting.

long-distance version

Find any hoop near each of you and play HORSE over a video call: the shooter calls the shot and films it, the other copies it on their hoop. Honesty system for the copies. It is surprisingly tense.
