my partner won't open up: how to help them talk

Make talking easier and lower-stakes: side-by-side moments, small questions, and no reaction that punishes what they share. People open up when it feels safe, not when they are pushed.

what not to say

how do I have this conversation?

  1. Pick side-by-side moments: driving, cooking, walking.
  2. Start with small, specific questions rather than "how do you feel?"
  3. When they share, thank them before you respond.
  4. If they get overwhelmed, offer a break and a time to come back.
  5. Share something of your own first. Openness tends to be returned.

Flamme AI is a coach, not a therapist - in a crisis, please reach a professional or local hotline. Chats are processed by our AI provider to generate replies; skip real names and sensitive details.

why does this work?

Shutting down in a hard conversation is often a sign of feeling overwhelmed, not of not caring. The Gottman Institute's advice for stonewalling is to agree on a signal, take a break of at least twenty minutes, and come back once both of you are calm. (source)

The kind of question matters. In Flamme's data, questions about communication get answers about 50% longer than fun questions, and reflective questions such as "Why are you still in this relationship?" get the longest answers of all. Specific, reflective questions draw people out. (source)

when should you see a professional?

If your partner seems low, anxious or numb for weeks, encourage them to see a doctor or therapist, and offer to help find one. Some people find it easier to open up to a professional first. If they talk about self-harm or not wanting to be alive, contact a crisis line now.

If you are in danger, being hurt or controlled, or thinking about harming yourself

Please contact a person now. Flamme AI is a coach, not a therapist or a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

To find a couples therapist, try the Gottman Referral Network or the Psychology Today therapist directory. Many therapists also work by video.

good questions, answered

Common reasons are growing up in a family that did not talk about feelings, fear of conflict, feeling judged in the past, or simply not having the words. It is rarely about not caring.
