how to end a fight before bed
You do not have to solve it before you sleep, you only have to pause it kindly and agree when you will pick it back up. A tired 1am argument rarely ends better than the same talk after breakfast.

- "I'm too tired to do this well. Can we stop here and talk tomorrow after work?"
- "I'm still upset, but I love you. That hasn't changed."
- "Can we just agree we're on the same team, and sort the details tomorrow?"
- "Do you want a hug, or some space tonight?"
what not to say
Walking out without saying when you'll talk
Stopping without a plan feels like stonewalling to the other person.
"Fine. Whatever."
It ends the talk but not the fight. Both of you lie awake replaying it.
Pushing to settle it because "never go to bed angry"
Forcing a resolution while exhausted or flooded usually makes it worse.
how do I have this conversation?
- Notice the clock. Past a certain point, nobody is arguing well.
- Say you want to pause, and name a specific time to continue.
- Say one warm thing, even if you are still annoyed.
- Ask what they need for the night: closeness or space. Both are fine.
- Keep the appointment. That is what makes the pause trustworthy next time.

why does this work?
When a fight floods you, your body is in stress mode and listening gets hard. The Gottman Institute recommends a break of at least twenty minutes doing something soothing on your own, because that is how long the body takes to calm down. A night's sleep is a long version of that break. (source)
The pause only works if it ends with a small repair. A warm sentence before bed counts. Gottman research calls these repair attempts: any statement or action that stops negativity from escalating. (source)
when should you see a professional?
If late-night fights are a regular thing, look at what feeds them (alcohol, exhaustion, money stress) and consider a couples therapist. If a partner will not let you leave the room, sleep, or end the conversation, that is a safety concern. See below.

good questions, answered
Going to bed with a fight unresolved is fine. Going to bed with it uncared for is the problem. Pause kindly, agree when you will talk, and you have done what the old advice is really about.
