stretching relay races for couples

Stretching relay races for two work in a simple order: race first with moving stretches like lunges, inchworms and leg swings between two cones, then cool down with slow partner stretches you hold for 20 to 30 seconds. It takes about 30 minutes, you race against the clock rather than each other, and you both finish looser than you started.

how to run a stretching relay for two

step 1

Set the course

Two cones or shoes 10 metres apart outdoors, 5 metres indoors. One person starts at each cone. You are a team, racing the stopwatch.

step 2

Warm up for 3 minutes

A light jog between the cones, then 10 arm circles and 10 hip circles each. Racing on cold muscles is how people pull hamstrings.

step 3

Run the five relays

For each relay, the first partner travels to the far cone using the move, tags the second, who travels back. That is one length each. Time each relay and add the five times together for your team score.

step 4

Cool down with partner stretches

Breathe slowly and talk the whole time. Partner stretching only works when you tell each other how it feels. Use a 1 to 10 scale and stay around a 5.

which partner stretches are safe to do together?

  • Seated straddle pull: sit facing each other, legs wide, feet touching. Hold hands or wrists. One leans back slowly to draw the other forward into a hamstring and inner-thigh stretch. 30 seconds, then swap.
  • Back-to-back twist: sit back to back, legs crossed. Both turn right, placing the right hand on the partner's left knee. Hold 20 seconds, then twist left.
  • Assisted hamstring: one lies on their back, the other lifts one straight leg slowly toward the ceiling until the lying partner says stop. Hold 20 to 30 seconds, then swap legs.
  • Standing quad with a balance hand: stand side by side, hold the outer shoulder of your partner for balance, and pull your outside foot toward your bottom. 30 seconds each leg.
  • Chest opener: one sits cross-legged with hands behind the head. The partner kneels behind and gently draws the elbows back until the sitter says stop. 20 seconds.

what are the rules for partner stretching?

The person being stretched is in charge. They say when to stop, and the helper never pushes past it. Move slowly into each stretch, hold without bouncing, and breathe out as you go deeper. A mild pull is the goal. Pain, a sharp feeling or tingling means back off straight away. Skip any stretch that loads a joint you have injured.

variations & upgrades

the weekly time trial

Write your team total in a note after every session. Racing the clock as a team means the slower partner's improvement counts just as much, and you will both see the number drop within a few weeks.

indoor hallway version

Shrink the course to 5 metres and swap the crab walk for a bear crawl if the floor is hard. Put a song on and the relay ends when it does: how many lengths can you do before the chorus?

long-distance version

Each of you runs the relay course alone on a video call: travel there and back with each move while your partner times you. Add your times together for the team total. Then do the solo versions of the cool-down stretches side by side on camera.

good questions, answered

A relay where each leg is travelled using a moving stretch, such as walking lunges, inchworms or high kicks, instead of running. For couples, you race as a team against the stopwatch and try to beat your combined time.
