magic tricks for couples

The easiest magic trick to learn as a couple is the key card trick: one deck, no sleight of hand, about 15 minutes to learn. Add the 21-card trick, which works by maths alone, and you have a two-trick routine to perform at your next dinner with friends. Below are four tricks with the full method, plus a week of practice so you can perform them without fumbling.

a one-week practice plan for two

step 1

Day 1: learn the method

Read the method for each trick below together and walk through it slowly with the cards face up so you both see how it works.

step 2

Days 2 to 4: perform for each other

Take turns. The audience partner's only job is to catch you: where did your eyes go, did you hesitate, did the cut look odd? Fix one thing per session.

step 3

Day 5: write the patter

Patter is the story you tell while the trick happens. A trick with a story ('this card is the one you would have picked on our first date') lands much better than one done in silence.

step 4

Days 6 and 7: the double act

One performs, the other plays the helper or the skeptic in the audience. Perform for one friend first, then a table. Never repeat a trick for the same audience the same night, and never explain how it works.

trick 1: the key card

Effect: your partner or a friend picks any card, puts it back and cuts the deck, and you find it. Method: before you start, secretly glimpse the bottom card of the deck as you square it. That is your key card. Spread the cards and have them take one, look at it, and place it on top of the deck. Have them cut the deck and complete the cut. That puts your key card directly above their card. Spread the deck face up, find your key card, and their card is the one right after it. Take your time finding it, as if you are reading their mind.

trick 2: the 21-card trick

Effect: the deck finds their card after three deals. Method: it works by maths, no skill. Deal 21 cards face up into three columns of seven, dealing across the rows. Ask them to think of a card and tell you only which column it is in. Gather the columns, putting their column between the other two. Deal again the same way, ask the column, gather it in the middle. Do it a third time. Their card is now the 11th card from the top. Count down slowly, or spell out 'abracadabra', which has 11 letters, one card per letter.

trick 3: you do as I do

Effect: you and a volunteer each pick a card from separate decks and pick the same one. Method: use two decks and the key card idea. You each shuffle a deck, then swap decks. Before you hand yours over, glimpse its bottom card. Each of you picks a card from the deck you now hold, remembers it, puts it on top and cuts. Swap decks back. Now each of you looks through the deck you hold to find the matching card of the one you picked and lays it face down. They look for theirs. You look for your key card and take the card just after it, which is the card they picked. They lay down its twin from the other deck. Turn both cards over together. They match.

trick 4: the french drop coin vanish

Effect: a coin vanishes from your hand. Method: hold the coin by its edges between thumb and fingertips of your left hand, palm up, fingers curled slightly. Your right hand comes over as if to grab it, thumb under, fingers over. As the right fingers cover the coin, let it drop silently into your left fingers, which curl closed around it. Close the right hand as if it holds the coin and move it away, watching the right hand. Let the left hand drop naturally. Open the right hand: nothing. This is a real sleight and takes several sessions in front of each other before it fools anyone. The audience partner will tell you when it does.

variations & upgrades

the mind-reading couple

Turn the key card trick into a 'we share a brain' bit. Before the show, agree a key card in private (pick your favorite card as a couple) and put it on the bottom of the deck. Your partner leaves the room, a friend picks a card, puts it on top and cuts. Your partner comes back, spreads the deck, and names the card that sits just after your shared key card.

long-distance version

The 21-card trick works perfectly on video: you deal on camera, they call out columns. The key card works too if they cut the deck in front of the camera and hand control back to you.

go see it done properly

Watch a close-up magic show together after you have learned these. Once you know how a key card works, watching a professional becomes twice as fun, because you can tell how much harder their tricks are.

good questions, answered

The key card trick. It needs one deck and no sleight of hand: you secretly know the bottom card, their card goes on top, a cut puts your card right above theirs. You can learn it in 15 minutes.
