Dry station

Whisk 2-1/4 cups (about 280 g) all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Line two baking sheets with parchment.

Wet station

Beat 1 cup (2 sticks, 227 g) softened butter with 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar and 3/4 cup (about 165 g) packed brown sugar until pale and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 large eggs, one at a time.

Combine

Add the dry mix to the wet in two goes, stirring just until no flour shows. Fold in 2 cups (a 12 oz / 340 g bag) of chocolate chips. Overmixing makes tough cookies.

Scoop and bake

Drop rounded tablespoons of dough 2 inches apart. Bake 9 to 11 minutes, until the edges are golden and the middles still look slightly underdone. Cool on the tray for 2 minutes, then move to a rack. Eat one each immediately.

who does what when two people bake?

Dry station: measures the flour, leavening and salt, whisks them together, lines the trays.
Wet station: creams the butter and sugar, cracks the eggs, adds the vanilla.
The dry person adds dry to wet while the wet person stirs. That handoff is the only time you both need the same bowl.
Whoever did not lick the spoon washes up while the batch bakes.
Swap stations next time. Most couples find out one of them is a measurer and one is an eyeballer.

rules for a fair two-person bake-off

1. Same clock: 90 minutes from first measure to plated bake.
2. Same base: both make the cookie recipe above, or both make a bake you agree on.
3. One mystery ingredient you each pick for the other from the cupboard. It has to be visible or tasteable in the final bake.
4. Blind judging: a friend, neighbor or roommate tastes both without knowing whose is whose.
5. Three scores out of 10: taste, look, and how well the mystery ingredient was used.
6. The loser washes up. The winner writes the next bake on the fridge.

Pick the same recipe, shop for it separately, and bake on a video call with the phone propped against the flour bag. Eat your batch together on camera. Send each other the best cookie by post if it is a short trip.

Many bakeries and cooking schools run couples baking classes, often $60 to $120 a person, covering bread, croissants or pasta. A good way to try something with lamination or shaping you would not attempt alone.

Make a double batch and take half to a neighbor, a friend who just moved, or your parents. Giving it away is often the best part of baking together.
